Count the hats

I was in New York for a meeting this week and as I walked the mile or so to the meeting I decided that I should count the number of New York sport fans. Best way was to count hats, jerseys and maybe other fan gear. I figured I would see Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, Rangers and Knicks. Maybe Nets and Islanders. I did the same on the walk back. The results:

Yankees 14 hats, 1 jacket
Giants 4 hats, 1 jersey (Eli Manning)
Jets 1 hat
Mets 1 hat (20 seconds before I stopped counting)
Rangers 0
Knicks 0
Islanders 0
Nets 0

Interesting enough I saw as many Dodgers, Marlins, Rays, Spurs, and Under Armour hats as Mets, and three times as many Nike hats.

A delicious seasonal beer from Brooklyn Brewery. It is available from August to November. 5% APV. Of the seasonal brews I have tried this is one of the better ones.

Bobby Vans

I had lunch in NYC the other day at Bobby Vans steakhouse at Park and 46th. The bone in rib eye was excellent, tasty and prepared perfectly. I normally have horse radish with my steak but they had some steak sauce on the table and I decided to try it. It was delicious too. It is good enough that I'm considering trying to buy some. The prices seemed reasonable for a NYC steakhouse, although probably a little pricey for most other places in the country.

The service was attentive, although not overly friendly, and I would recommend eating at this restaurant. They have numerous locations in NYC but also JFK Airport, Bridgehampton and 2 in DC.

Waxing

First this is not about any of my children.

Mrs Cast Iron pointed out to me the other day that she thinks that one of my kid's friends waxes their eyebrows. I assumed that she was referring to one of the girls with particular bushy eyebrows, oh no. She was referring to a 13 year old boy.

What is a fan 2

I had to travel to New York today. Lots of business people on the train, many wearing suits. Unlike most trips one guy stuck out. Why? Not because of his conservative gray suit, white shirt or somber tie. Why? He had a baseball cap on too. It wasn't raining, and it wasn't cold, so why? I can only guess he was a fan.

He was however misguided. It was a NY Giants hat. It is not like he was rubbing Eagles fans noses in our miserable season, the Giants after all just lost to Seattle. He must just be a fan.

What makes a fan?

Another miserable week in Philadelphia sports. The Phillies are out and the Eagles are down, but that is not the post today.

I had coffee with a collegue today. I know that he is a Yankees fan and that he grew up in New York. So reasonably I asked if he was Giants or Jets, and he said neither. Ok, what then? He said I don't follow professional football. Ok I can understand that. (Correction I don't understand it but can accepted that it occurs). He then goes on the explain why, he moved around too much in his professional career and couldn't get attached to a team. If he had to choose he would go back to his days in Los Angeles and choose the USC Trojans, after all their players are paid and therefore professional. A lame joke.

It got me thinking, shouldn't the same reasoning ring true with his choice of the Yankees as well. He clearly likes football but somehow reject the team he supported as a kid because they haven't won anything for a while. He should have just said I prefer college football or something. I just don't understand.

Broadcaster

PrimeTime, T-Bone and I came across a new beer today. The Broadcaster Brown Ale at World Cafe Live. I was expecting a much heavier beer but this was flavorful, light and not overly fizzy. It is good if you want a couple of them but I can't imagine making an evening out of it though

It is time to go

What a crappy Eagles game today. Who should go, the head coach, the defensive coordinator, the kicker, the general manager, or maybe just my belief in this team? If I bought this crap from store, I would just return it. Buyer beware probably.
