City Visit

I took the family to the city yesterday. We had some returns but really want to see more than our own house. We ate at EL Vez which I was a little nervous that the kids wouldn't find anything they liked but we a few deletions they loved the nachos. I went with the chicken burritos and Mrs went with the fish tacos. As usual it was great. This is now the third Stephen Starr restaurant the kids have enjoyed.

We finished the day with the Christmas Show on the big screen at the Comcast Building. It was very good and just the right amount of time too at abou 15 minutes. Septa even run just right to get as to and from without an issue.

The day was topped off with Aussie Lamb Cutlets from Costco on the grill, a couple glasses of bourbon slush and finding 6 tickets to wing bowl in the mail box. Couldn't ask for more.

Christmas Tradition

Last night we came back from what is now becoming a Christmas Tradition.

It involved going down town, with lots of complaining because that's what kids do. We would have dinner, and go to a show. Last year we went to the Continental but this year I decided we would try a new place for the rest of the family. We kept with the Stephen Starr theme and went to Jones. I decided on this for two reasons, first it was close to the Theatre and second it had the type of food that any family would love. Comfort Food. It was exceptional.

We had a very diverse range. There were 6 of us, 3 adults, 3 kids, and more food than we could all eat. I had the Jambalaya, The Mrs had Tandoori Chicken, her Mom the Chicken Pot Pie, First Child Chicken and Waffles, Second Child Bacon Cheese Burger and the third Baked Mac and Cheese. It was all delicious. It is not often that everybody is happy with their meal. We skipped dessert and headed to somewhere else.

The Franklin Foundation is an old time ice cream shop. They have throw back soda, candy and delicious ice cream. It is worth the visit anytime you are in Old City. I think next time we will come away with a variety back of old time soda as well.

After we went to the Arden Theatre to see Charlotte's Web. Another great show at the Arden. We have previously seen The Littles, and Peter Pan. We will be going back in the spring to see Robin Hood.

Nicknames revisited again.

It seems the younger generation thinks it is okay to give themselves their own nicknames.

PrimeTime, TBone and I were trying to recruit for the company softball team. Two new employees seemed to show some promise, until they opened their mouths and decided that they were God's gift to our softball team. Both decided that they should also decide on their own nicknames. I just don't understand.

I suppose you always have the option to suggest a nickname (like T Bone) and have it accepted (like T Bone). But I have to say that is different. We have know T Bone for at least 5 years before he suggested the names and we accepted it. These guys we only just spoke too and they are suggesting their own nick names. I don't think it will work out well for them.

Movies on Planes

As I said in the previous post I watched many of these movies on planes. Now the foul language used in the film doesn't matter as head phones are used so you can sit anywhere. Now I had aisle seats when I watched Horrible Bosses and The Change Up. That was a mistake. I had to fast forward through a number of scenes as the people around me had front row seats to what was on the screen.

Lesson learnt. Must get a window seat so that the Ipad can be angled so that I'm the only one that can see,

Movies

I've had a chance to catch up on some movie watching in the last month, generally because of long plane trips. I have seen:

Bridesmaids
The Change Up
Horrible Bosses
Super 8
Captain America
Hanna

All were ok, and wouldn't crack my top 100 films. Although I heard Bridesmaids was excellent I thought it only ok. Maybe the expectations were too high. Perhaps it's comparison to The Hangover, which is in my top 100, left me expecting more.

The Change Up was probably the best of the this lot. It was funny, and although the language (like the language in Horrible Bosses) was extreme, it certainly added to the movie.

Dark Chocolate Minty Mallows

I was at Trader Joe's, which is one of my favorite stores this weekend. After buying the things I needed and then also stocking up on things I wanted, I was standing in a short line to check out.

I glanced around and "what to my wondering eyes should appear" (well not "a miniature sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer") but Dark Chocolate Minty Mallows. I have always had a liking to chocolate covered marshmallows and decided to try these ones. They are delicious, and after 24 hours the 7 oz box was empty.

Valley Forge

My kids and I drove through Valley Forge National Park this afternoon. As we came up to the Washington Arch (The National Memorial Arch) we noticed wreaths around it, and each had a red ribbon. There must have been hundreds of them, and it was a beautiful sight this Christmas season. Something worth seeing if you are in the area.

As it turns out there are 2000 wreaths to commemorate the 2000 people that lost their lives during the 1777 / 1778 encampment.

Reclining

What is it with people who have to recline their seats on a flight that is just over an hour? I would guess they only eat at fast food restaurants too because they can't sit upright for too long.

Does Size Matter?

How important is the size of a hotel room if you are only staying one night? Obviously important enough for somebody on the train this morning to talk about it for 5 minutes, and loud enough for me to easily hear 3 rows away. As he can't stop talking, it all makes sense now  He works for a very large insurance company that was bailed out by the government. This guys self importance is as big as his employer's debt to the US taxpayer.

Sugar Free

Should somebody who wants a hot chocolate from DD worry if it is sugar free?

Is it possible

Is it possible that all my teams can win on the same week?

Can the kids win their games or races, can the pro teams win, can my fantasy sports teams win? Sometimes like in September it could be tough, with kids baseball, football and soccer, pro baseball and football and fantasy football and baseball. But other times like this weekend their was only pro and fantasy football. Only two games. Couldn't even win one.

New Orleans

I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans the other week. I had visited New Orleans over 20 years ago but only for a weekend so I didn't know too much about it.

The visit was quick, less than 24 hours but long enough to have a couple of meals. The first was at Emeril's in the Warehouse district. The reviews were good and it didn't disappoint. I had the Drum Fish special which was excellent. I washed it down with an Abita Jockamo IPA. It was great. At the next table I believe that Zach G. from the Hangover movies was dining.

http://www.abita.com/brews/jockamo.php

The next day I had lunch at Herbsaint. The gumbo was exceptional. They also had drum fish on the menu, after the previous night I had it again. Although not as good as the night before it was very good and would order it again.

The Hilton Garden Inn was okay but convenient.

The best part of the city was probably the people. Everybody was friendly, and helpful. It would be a fun place to stay with good friends.

Not much good

Another bad loss by the Eagles. The best part was the entire stadium chanting,

Fire, Andy, fire, Andy.

R2l

R2L s the restaurant on th 38th Floor of Two Liberty Place.

Great views even if the day was overcast, the service was good and the burger better than most. In fact the actually patty might have been the tastiest I have had, but the rest was just ok. Overall a strong 3.75 score but not as good as 5 guys, 500 degrees, Ted's or the Perch Pub.

Airports

November 15 and Christmas decorations are being put up in Philadelphia airport.

Charlotte Airport is so high class that it has bathroom attendants in the bathrooms with tip jars. It seemed kind of weird especially because the guy was on his cell phone.

Brad Wing

Have you ever heard of Brad Wing? The WSJ on Friday had a very good article on the Aussie punter who plays at LSU. He has punted 39 times, 20 inside the 20 but the most amazing stat is that opponents have only 7 return yards. An average on about 6 inches per punt.

Redneck

Spend the afternoon today using the chainsaw on a fallen tree. After finishing I sat in the garage on a beach chair, grabbed a High Life and watched the world go by. And it was good.

If

If the Eagles were a baseball team they would be the Mets.

At least I now know how PrimeTime feels during baseball season. The good news is that the football season is not as long as the baseball season.

Just fire them all.

Sonic

The burger challenge continued (although on life support) with a visit to Sonic. The concept of delivery to your car is novel and was surprisingly fast. The food was nothing special. The Super Sonic Bacon Double Cheeseburger was disappointing. Very little flavor. It did smell good though. I also tried the mozzarella sticks which started good but ended with a very greasy taste.

This is not a burger to compare with 5 guys or even Wendy's.

Walters Golf

A friend told me about his new service at a golf course in Las Vegas. Very Interesting.

Sportsmanship

At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?"

The little boy nodded 'yes'.

"So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head. Do you understand all that?" The little boy nodded 'yes' again.

He continued, "And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach 'a dumb a--' is it?" The little boy shook his head 'NO'.

"GOOD," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother."

Count the hats

I was in New York for a meeting this week and as I walked the mile or so to the meeting I decided that I should count the number of New York sport fans. Best way was to count hats, jerseys and maybe other fan gear. I figured I would see Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, Rangers and Knicks. Maybe Nets and Islanders. I did the same on the walk back. The results:

Yankees 14 hats, 1 jacket
Giants 4 hats, 1 jersey (Eli Manning)
Jets 1 hat
Mets 1 hat (20 seconds before I stopped counting)
Rangers 0
Knicks 0
Islanders 0
Nets 0

Interesting enough I saw as many Dodgers, Marlins, Rays, Spurs, and Under Armour hats as Mets, and three times as many Nike hats.

A delicious seasonal beer from Brooklyn Brewery. It is available from August to November. 5% APV. Of the seasonal brews I have tried this is one of the better ones.

Sales

Just in case you missed it, Jos A Banks is having a sale today. Buy 1, get 2 free of anything in the store.

Bobby Vans

I had lunch in NYC the other day at Bobby Vans steakhouse at Park and 46th. The bone in rib eye was excellent, tasty and prepared perfectly. I normally have horse radish with my steak but they had some steak sauce on the table and I decided to try it. It was delicious too. It is good enough that I'm considering trying to buy some. The prices seemed reasonable for a NYC steakhouse, although probably a little pricey for most other places in the country.

The service was attentive, although not overly friendly, and I would recommend eating at this restaurant. They have numerous locations in NYC but also JFK Airport, Bridgehampton and 2 in DC.

Waxing

First this is not about any of my children.

Mrs Cast Iron pointed out to me the other day that she thinks that one of my kid's friends waxes their eyebrows. I assumed that she was referring to one of the girls with particular bushy eyebrows, oh no. She was referring to a 13 year old boy.

What is a fan 2

I had to travel to New York today. Lots of business people on the train, many wearing suits. Unlike most trips one guy stuck out. Why? Not because of his conservative gray suit, white shirt or somber tie. Why? He had a baseball cap on too. It wasn't raining, and it wasn't cold, so why? I can only guess he was a fan.

He was however misguided. It was a NY Giants hat. It is not like he was rubbing Eagles fans noses in our miserable season, the Giants after all just lost to Seattle. He must just be a fan.

Monday, October 10, 2011

What makes a fan?

Another miserable week in Philadelphia sports. The Phillies are out and the Eagles are down, but that is not the post today.

I had coffee with a collegue today. I know that he is a Yankees fan and that he grew up in New York. So reasonably I asked if he was Giants or Jets, and he said neither. Ok, what then? He said I don't follow professional football. Ok I can understand that. (Correction I don't understand it but can accepted that it occurs). He then goes on the explain why, he moved around too much in his professional career and couldn't get attached to a team. If he had to choose he would go back to his days in Los Angeles and choose the USC Trojans, after all their players are paid and therefore professional. A lame joke.

It got me thinking, shouldn't the same reasoning ring true with his choice of the Yankees as well. He clearly likes football but somehow reject the team he supported as a kid because they haven't won anything for a while. He should have just said I prefer college football or something. I just don't understand.

Broadcaster

PrimeTime, T-Bone and I came across a new beer today. The Broadcaster Brown Ale at World Cafe Live. I was expecting a much heavier beer but this was flavorful, light and not overly fizzy. It is good if you want a couple of them but I can't imagine making an evening out of it though

What a crappy Eagles game today. Who should go, the head coach, the defensive coordinator, the kicker, the general manager, or maybe just my belief in this team? If I bought this crap from store, I would just return it. Buyer beware probably.

Eternal Questions of Life

At what age should somebody stop wearing their baseball cap backwards?

Should you tip a drink cart person on a golf course if all they do is reach back and open the cooler and nothing else?

When should people be invited to an event and when shouldn't they, especially if there is extra spaces available? Or should the event just have less people, even if that means paid spots go unused?

When should your under performing first round pick be benched, dropped or traded? ie Chris Johnson, Arian Foster.

Why do some people who make their living selling, aren't able to return a telephone call?

Do kids today know how to give a nick name?

Why do some people ignore others that can influence a relationship?

Which is more fun playing good golf with strangers or playing bad golf with friends?

If your child wants to support an out of town team should you let them?

Is it better not to invite somebody that is a wet blanket but who expects to be invited, or just not have the event at all?

Why don't kids go to the bathroom before they leave the house, but they need to go as soon as they get somewhere else (even if they only left the house 60 seconds ago)?

Wine, beer, spirits or does it depend?

Coke or Pepsi?

Rib Eye or Filet?

Ham or Turkey?

On Hotdogs - ketchup or mustard?

In Coffee - milk, cream, nothing or something else?

NL East Champions

On a cold night my 2 boys and I went to Citizens Bank park to watch the Phillies. We were hoping that they would win the division tonight, and Roy Oswalt set them up to do so. Stutes made it interesting by giving up a couple of runs, but Brad Lidge shut that mini rally down by getting the third out on only one pitch.

The bottom of the eighth inning had two highlights with Hunter Pence beating out a close through for an infield single, and then of course Raul's grand slam. The place went wild.

A couple of photos from the night. Great pics as they came from my cell phone.

St Supery

The Minx was very nice to give me an early 2011 Christmas present (or was it a late 2010). Regardless it was a St. Supery 2009 Moscato. It was delicious, easy to drink, and left me wanting a second bottle.

The description from the St Supery website for the 2010 version:

St Supery.com

Brilliant hues pale yellow and green hues present this Moscato. Aromas abound with rich apricots, peach blossom and exotic guava. Vibrant ripe sweet flavors of nectarine, peach and citrus complete a full rich profile finishing with bright acidity. This wine is lightly sweet with a crisp acidity that keeps it light on the palate and hence a great companion to a wide variety of foods. Enjoy as an aperitif with salty snacks, with spicy Asian and Latin cuisine and also with fruit-based desserts and cheese courses.

We drank it was Salmon with various spices cooked on the grill. They went very well together.

Don't forget

The rugby world cup starts tomorrow in New Zealand. The Wallabies are one of the favorites. They play in the same pool as the US, Russia, Ireland and Italy. It should be a fun couple of weeks.

Aussies Aussie Aussie.

Bad fantasy week

I crept into the fantasy baseball playoffs by beating Coach in the final game. All up a very frustrating season. I scored the second most points in the league for the season but managed to finish at .500. In the first round of the playoffs I play Bone Marrow. It is fairly close but it didn't help that Chase Utley took a ball off his noggin and will miss a couple of games. I need all the points I can get.

We had our fantasy football draft this week too. I think I had a really good draft and was happy to grab Peyton Manning in the 8th round with the hope that he would miss only a couple of weeks and then put up the fantasy numbers he traditionally has. I was ready for a good season, and have been crowing about it to the other team owners. Of course after telling Man U that I thought he had a ordinary draft he was more than happy to let me know that Peyton had surgery today and would be out for 2-3 months.

Ahhh....

New England Beers

I tried another 3 beers from my recent trip to Maine and New Hampshire.

The UFO Raspberry Heferweizen - very sweet. Ok if you like fruit beers, but wouldn't order a case, or even a middy. I believe it comes from Harpoon in Boston.

Long Trail Breweries Blackbeary Wheat. Another fruit bear which I preferred over the raspberry but not enough to order again. Long Trail is from Vermont.

Long Trail Double Bag. Not a bad beer and slightly different from all the IPAs that are served all over. Easy to drink with good flavor. Something to try outside of mass produced or IPAs.

Good news is that I didn't buy the fruit beers but was given them to try.

October Beers

I read an article in the Philly Inquirer about October beers which forced me to go to the best grocery store in the world, Wegmans. I bought the following:

Flying Dog - DogtoberFest Marzen - 5.6% (Frederick MD)
Weyerbacher - Imperial Pumpkin Ale - 8% (Easton PA)
Sly Fox - OctobeFest Lager - 5.8% (Phoenixville PA)

All are very tasty. I have become a big fan of Flying Dog and Sly Fox. All the beers I have tried from these breweries have been very good, and easy to drink. The Weyerbacher was great but at 8% not drinking a ton of them a once.

New Apps

I have an IPad 2, which I love. Apart from just how easy it is to use, the number of apps you can get is huge. A new one I just downloaded is called Stumble Upon. You put in the topics that you are interested in and it randomly "stumbles upon" websites relating to that topic. There is a wide range of topics, baseball, football, history, music, movies, etc.

I tried it out for the first time and this flow chart on baseball was shown.

As a Phillies fan I'm particulary impressed with how the Mets and Yankees.

So early

I walked past a card store today and noticed the expected Halloween decorations, but their was also a little display in the corner with Christmas decorations. I love Christmas, it is my favorite holiday but common on it is September 2, some kids aren't even back in school from their summer break, labor day is still a few days away, and yet the retail trade must be doing so bad that we have to have to get ready for Christmas in September.

Merry, Merry.

Tin Cup

Just finished watching the Phillies beat the Reds again and switched over to watch the end of Tin Cup. What a great ending when he finally holes it out for a 12 in the US Open and throws the ball into the water to join the other half dozen or so he put in the pond. He also gets the girl in the end. He even makes the statement "Nice par David", to sound like an insult.

Great American Ball Park

Just back from the Phillies v Reds game in Cincinnati. Phils won 3-2 with Hamels pitching 6 innings but not getting the decision. Madsen got the save.

Great ballpark but on a beautiful summer night at 80 degrees with the best team in baseball visiting they could only get 20,000 or so fans to come out. The stadium is nice, the fans friendly (although not as friendly as St Louis), and the food great. Had two chilli cheese dogs which were very tasty, although the chilli dog at the Rokies was the best I've had at a ballpark, or perhaps ever. They also have a BBQ shack in the outfield serving brisket. They have a different speciality sandwich depending on the team visiting. Tonight was the Philly Cheesesteak. Brisket on a roll covered with cheese wiz. The brisket was tender but not especially flavorful, the wiz was gooey but the roll was just average. Worth trying once but that was it. All up a fun night with the good guys winning.

Tinto

Took Mrs Cast Iron to Tinto for her birthday recently. I had been once before and had another awesome dinner. We went with the upper end chef's selection ($70 each) with the wine pairing ($30). Our favorites were:

LOBSTER - smoked roe, brioche, truffle espuma
NEW YORK STRIP - herb roasted trumpets, truffled goat cheese
REVUELTO DE BACALAO - soft scrambled egg, black cod, goat cheese, spinach

but we probably had another half dozen dishes, including dessert, all of which we good.

We weren't much for the two red wine selections but the white wine was excellent. It was VERDEJO, Ermita de Nieve, Rueda, 2010. It is apparently a special order in PA.

Also tried the Darkhorse Boffo Brown Ale. First sip was excellent but the next just proved to be average.

The server we had was very knowledgable and friendly. Once we decided what we wanted it came quickly. All up we were in and out within about 90 minutes.

Smuttynose

Just back from Maine and New Hampshire and tried the local Portsmouth brew, Smuttynose. Both the Pale Ale and Summer ales were delicious. The Summer was particular good and probably one of my favorite summer ales.

PrimeTime also shared with me a Sierra Nevada Summer Ale. A good summer beer, that is not too light and has plenty of flavor. This was in exchange for the Cooper's Sparkling Ale, Steinlager and James Boags that I gave PT, T-Bone and Bone Marrow in our beer exchange. The exchange is on life support. For those keeping count I have supplied 6 varieties, PT 2 and TB and BM 1 each. Very disappointing boys.

Ted's Montana Grill

The burger challenge continued with a visit to Ted's Montanta Grill. This a higher end burger place, with an added twist of having Bison burgers.

PrimeTime, T-Bone and I all had the Bison variety of the following burgers.

Me - The Kitchen Sink - American Cheese, ham, bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions and a runny fried egg. This was the best burger I have had so far and scored a 4.5 but it then lost .25 of a point for cost at $18.

PT - The Red Rock jalapeño peppers, pepper jack cheese, onions straws and z sauce. Same score, same reasons, still behind 5 guys. Cost $16.

TB - George's Cadillac- Cheddar cheese, smoky bacon and BBQ sauce. Same score same reasons. Cost $15.

Overall great food but a little pricy for burgers.

Two Hands

I tried a very interesting wine tonight from Two Hands. It was a 2008 Moscato called Brilliant Disguise. It was light, fruity and with a little fizz. It was infinitely drinkable at only 7% APV. It great summer wine, but it was only in a 500 ml bottle, so a couple of bottles will be needed. The price was $16.49 but that was maybe a year ago.

Went to the U2 concert last night. It was awesome. The stage was huge, the music great and the weather perfect. The concert had a good mix of old and new songs. The Linc was also a good place to see a concert.

Far From Home Cafe

PrimeTime, T-Bone and I continued our burger adventure yesterday, as well as started the much anticipated "Street Meat Summer 2011".

We went to Love Park and tried Far From Home Cafe. I had the Mighty Big burger, and the Mac and cheese empanadas, PT and TB had the Mighty Jerk burger, with PT also trying the Mexico City empanada.

The Mighty Big Burger had two patties, two slices of cheese, tomato, fried onions, lettuce, pickles and mighty sauce. The Mighty Jerk Burger had jerk spices, provolone, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions and caribbean ranch mayo. The mighty sauce was great and rivaled that of 500 degrees. The bun was solid and kept the burg together very well. The flavors were excellent and you could pick the individual ingredients. The patties were cooked on the well side, and remained hot to warm throughout eating. The cheese was slightly disappointing.

Overall this was an excellent burger. We all rated the burgers 4*. For me it was slightly below 5 Guys. The service was excellent, very friendly, and farily quick.

Integrity 2

As a follow up to my previous post of June 21.

I was reading the recent edition of Sports Illustrated magazine where they were catching up with various people in the "where are they now issue". It has great articles on Yogi Berra, the actors from Major League and others. The one that caught my attention was on Sir Roger Bannister, the first person to run a sub 4 minute mile. The SI article quotes from his book, "Four Minute Mile" and says "the Greek ideal was that sport should be a preparation for life in general".

If it is golf, softball or little league the game should be played hard, but always fair, always to the rules, and always with good sportsmanship. It seems what you see on the playing fields is a reflection of the person.

Happy July 4th

Take a look around your neighborhoods and count the number of US flags. I'm surprised there isn't more. If you have one put out, if you don't have one buy one for next time.

White Dog Cafe

I went to the White Dog Cafe in Wayne today with some customers. The food and atmosphere were excellent. I had the mozzarella and tomato Salad to start and then had the mushroom omelet. Probably the best part was the dessert which was a s'more made with a brownie, Graham cracker ice-cream and marshmallow on top of the brownie.

ManU and Footnote were also there. Footnote had a turkey burger with the cheddar cheese pressed between the two 3oz patties, she said it was delicious. ManU tried the bread pudding with fresh berries. It was maybe the best dessert he had ever had. He reported that it was lighter compared to a traditional bread pudding.

The turkey burger was a special but everything else was on the menu.

PBR

Pabst Blue Ribbon. Try it. Easy to drink. Tastes good. As the names suggests it is a blue ribbon.

St Louis Cardinals

I had to travel to St Louis the last couple of days and was fortunate enough that the Phillies were in town too. One of the people I was meeting with organized to have his company's tickets. Although the Phillies lost, it was a good night. The stadium is great and one of my favorites. The people of St Louis are very welcoming to opposing team fans too.

Check out the outfield grass too. The have cut the Gateway Arch into the design.

Birchrunville Cafe

My wife, parents and I visited this fabulous Chester County restaurant. Besides it being a BYO which allows us to bring some old Aussie wines, the mine is great. I had the duck wrapped in bacon. Absolutely fantastic.

A couple of recommendations about this restaurant. Leave plenty of time to get there, arrive early as the parking is limited, and bring good wine to match the great food.

Integrity

I remember when I was first starting my career and was invited to play golf I was told that that you can tell at lot about the people you are playing with by how they conduct themselves on the golf course. If the game is to be played by all the rules scores kept, one team wins and other losses, money may change hands or drinks purchased, some people may bend the rules to win at all costs. It is probably how they would contact business too when things get a little tough. Corners are cut, rules ignored, maybe even new rules are invented.

After tonight I now know that it applies to company softball too. If it means that much to you that you have to cheat, invent new rules and knock over players that are old enough to be your parents, and then don't help them up (don't even check if he is ok), then I'm probably not too eager to do business with you. At the very least I should check that I have my wallet and watch after any meetings with these folks.

Maybe I'm getting old, but there is a way to play, win or lose, but that is not what happened tonight.

Overheard

Just back from the morning run to get coffee at DD with T-Bone and overheard the following from a 20 something male:

"How many calories in a frozen hot chocolate?"

If you have to ask it has too many. Come on.

Anyway how can you have something that is frozen that is also hot.

Hangover 2

Just got back from seeing Hangover 2. Great movie. Very similar to the first but with a couple of twists. Don't see it with your kids. It is rated R for good reason.

State of Origin

Big win by the Blues against the cane toads 18 to 8. Onto the decider in Brisbane in 3 weeks. Nice to hear the Aussie commentators too as well as seeing Ricky Stuart having a beer with his players.

Accents

I was reminded today about people and listening to my accent. Some days I'm asked if I'm from Boston, other times from England, New Zealand or even South Africa. All wrong. My favorite though is when a work colleage (I believe it was farm building) introduced me to his parents. After chatting for a few minutes they left. Later I heard that the following conversation between son and parents:

"Does he have an a speech impediment?"

"No, he's Australian"

New Team Suggestions

I thought about this some more and here is a list of suggestions of schools for Mascot Madness for the final 7 spots.

Bucknell Bisons
Lehigh Mountain Hawks
Lafayette Leopards
Seton Hall Pirates
Pittsburgh Panthers
West Virginia Mountaineers
Holy Cross Crusaders
Catholic University Cardinals (although I think they should be the Saints)
James Madison Dukes
Kings College Monarchs (Interesting Match up against James Madison)
George Mason Patriots (Another interesting potential match up for Kings)
Whittier College Poets (This could be a play in game with the Quakers and Diplomats. They would be in the "Lovers not Fighters" division)
Slippery Rock Rocks
Sweat Briar College Vixens
Vassar College Brewers

Here is a website that has a lot of interesting names:

http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/

Let me know your thoughts,

Mascot Madness

Very much like March Madness for the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament we (the normal cast of characters) decided to do a bracket of college mascots to see who would win. Does an Owl beat a Hawk, who would a spider beat, does a bullet kill a diplomat, does a wave drown a knight? All interesting questions. Instead of just picking colleges the field needs to have some meaning. First up we looked at the various schools we all attended, then Philadelphia area schools, schools that spouses attended, softball players etc. A field of 64 would be idea but maybe too many.

Here is the list so far:

Penn Quakers
LaSalle Explorers (Great on the road but restless at home)
Temple Owls (much prefer to play at night)
St Joseph's Hawks
Villanova Wildcats
Richmond Spiders
Gettysburg Bullets (An early favorite)
Rider Bronco
Franklin & Marshall Diplomats
Dickinson Red Devils
Delaware Blue Hens
Trinity Bantams
St John's Red Storm
Allegheny Gators
Rutgers Scarlett Knights
Pepperdine Waves
Indiana Hoosiers
Towson Tigers
Massachusetts Minutemen
Drexel Dragons
WestChester Rams
Cornell Bears
Clemson Tigers
Penn State Nittany Lions
University of California Santa Cruz - Banana Slugs (I thought the name was interesting)

That is 25. A good start but need at least another 7 to get this going. Suggestions welcome.

Quick Trip

I made a quick trip to New York City today. At last count they had 7 pro teams in the area (Giants, Jets, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, Nets and Islanders) and the Mets. A cheap shot at PrimeTime I know, and the Nets are NJ but close enough. The also have some D1 college teams. All up a reasonable sports town (not Philly) but reasonable.

Anyway I go to a bar to grab a quick drink with a customer. Most bars have a TV, which this did. Most bars will have sports on that TV, which this did. But this bar had the Durham Bulls against the Louisville Bats (Rays and Reds AAA affiliates). I know that the Mets are bad but to show a AAA game in a bar just shows how far baseball has fallen in NYC.

JG Domestic

I went to this relatively new restaurant for lunch last week at the urging of a work colleague. Fortunately they decided to come with me and suggested that I try the pulled pork sandwich. I probably would have gone with the burger but I went with their recommendation, and boy was I happy with it.

Smoked Berkshire Pork - Carolina Style BBQ, Apple Slaw on a Dutch Roll. It was hot, juicy and very flavorful. It grabs you from the first bite. Try it.

Aussie BBQ

My wife and I hosted an Aussie BBQ a couple of weekends ago. We have done this before, but previously it was a fund raiser for the local elementary school, but this year given some work being done on the house we couldn't commit to a date. Anyway with the work finished we quickly check dates with good friends (all 40 of them), and went ahead.

I'm a little partial but the food was awesome. I think the hit was the new kangaroo sausages from Exotic Meats and More. I hadn't had the sausages before but they were great. They had a spice to them that made them surprising. Everybody raved about them.

Along with the snags we had lamb chops, spiced prawns, lamb skewers, and "shrimp on the barbie". Of course we served vegemite sandwiches. For dessert we had Passion Fruit, Whipped Cream and Meringue. It tasted very similar to Pavolva, but much easier to make.

We washed it down with Aussie red and white wine, and a selection of beers. Cooper's Original Ale (Green Bottle), Cooper's Sparkling Ale (Red Bottle), Cooper's Vintage Ale, James Boags Premium Lager and from New Zealand Steinlager. Love all these beers, even the Steinlager. Please note no Foster's was served.

Disappointing Food

As you know I was at the White Sox vs Twins Game on Tuesday night. We got to the game early and walked around the stadium to look what food looked good. I even asked somebody what they would recommend, Polish Sausage and DiGiorno Pizza. That should have been the red flag but maybe he just liked baked at home Pizza.

I decided on the Polish sausage. Nothing special at all. The bread roll was like a cheap hot roll, and fell apart. The fried onions were tasteless, and the sausage over cooked. Although no outrageous for ball park food at $5.75, it still was not worth it.

No Hitter

In Chicago for a few days and decided to go to a baseball game. The Cubs are out of town so decided to see the White Sox play. The played the Twins. Francisco Liriano threw a no hitter. I think it is the first one this season. The final play Adam Dunn, the DH for the Sox, was up and hit a screaming line drive which was snatched from the air to perserve the no hitter and win the game. Liriano had never pitched a shut out because he had never pitched a complete game. The pitcher he was facing tonight was Edwin Jackson who pitched a no hitter last year. Final score Twins 1 White Sox 0.

Another question, why does it seem that no hitters and perfect games end 1-0?

Five Guys

PrimeTime and I left Bone Marrow and T-Bone and decided to venture to Five Guys Burgers and Fries to continue our burger challenge. This was my favorite going in and one that I didn't think would be topped, at least until I went to 500 degrees.

Five Guys didn't disappoint. I have near the office and the house. My boys love it as do I. I generally go with the cheese burger (double patties), lettuce, fried onions and ketchup. PrimeTime added jalepeno peppers . Although the presentation isn't the best, (the buns are normally squashed) the burger is awesome It is hot, juicy, and full of flavor. The service is slower than fast food but much quicker than a sit down place. The cheese is melted to perfection. Overall this is my go to burger.

I only rate it slightly lower than 500 degrees (the ketchup there is fantastic - See post April 6, 2011. I scored it a 4.2 (vs 4.25 for 500). PrimeTime rated the best so far at 4.5. Difficult to argue with him on this great burger.

Spring Break

Just back from Spring Break with the family. We visited the Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia and Th Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs in West Virginia. Both are beautiful old school resorts.

The Homestead

Greenbrier

We had to get dressed up (jacket and tie) for dinner in the main dining room, ate huge buffet breakfasts, and played golf at The Meadows at the Greenbrier, and swam. Mrs Cast Iron and the boys did a tour of the bunker which I had done previously. Carved deep into the mountainside beneath the West Virginia Wing of the hotel is an emergency Cold War fallout shelter built during the Eisenhower era. Once a top secret U.S. government relocation facility for Congress, designed to house members of Congress and their staffs during [and after] a nuclear attack. It was decommissioned in the early 1990's after Ted Gup of the Washington Post reveled its existence in 1992.

One of the more interesting things we did was swim at the Jefferson Pools. These natural springs are a constant 98 degrees and full of natural minerals. Apparently Thomas Jefferson spent  three weeks there in 1818, and swam in the pool 3 times a day. It is said to rejuvenate you after floating in them. After an hour, Mrs Cast Iron and I just felt that we needed a nap.

I was very disappointed on the beer selection at both places. I hoped that both would have a good selection of local brews but it was not the case. At The Homestead I tried The Homestead Lager which was decent but nothing too write home about. Good taste, with a hint of hops, but nothing more.

At the Greenbrier I had the Shock Top Belgium White. Never heard of it before and then I saw it today in Wegman's. (Yes PT, TB and BM I have the next two brews for the exchange, I'm sick of waiting for you chumps). It is served with a slice of orange, and clearly made as competition for Blue Moon. This is a Michelob product, and very easy to drink. There is a touch of citrus, not quite a good as Blue Moon but would be quite refreshing on a hot day.

Favorite Premium Beer

I think I surprised my wife when I declared a beer my favorite that wasn't VB. I did say that it was my favorite premium beer. What beer? Samuel Smith's Pure Brewed Lager.

SamSPBLagerFront.jpg

It is remarkably complex for a lager. It has a sweetness to it that you don't normally get and I equate to honey. It is smooth and something you can enjoy again and again But it comes at a premium price which is the only downside for me.

Surprised

I'm sitting on the train this morning and we pull into a train station. The lady that I'm sitting next to is getting off. She turns to me and says "Excuse me, sir". Wow, she said "sir". She was easily in her 30s, and she called me "sir". I'm sure she was just being polite, but I felt old.

Maybe I need some Just for Men. Mmmmm....

Flying Dog

I have been staring at her for a week or two. She was certainly daring me to pick her up. Finally tonight was the night. With my wife watching I picked up another women, and she was a Raging Bitch, from Flying Dog Brewery.  Beer-Anniversary  I believe that this was brewed for Flying Dog's 20th Anniversary.

Although a decent hoppy beer it was much like the a lot of the others I have been drinking. The other Flying Dog beers have been good but this was average. This is an American IPA at 8.3% APV, and a mixture of 3 different hops.

I think it is time to go back to a lager or pils.

500 Degrees

In an amazing turn of events Bone Marrow, T-Bone, PrimeTime and I were all in the office today. We have been negligent for our burger challenge but decided that today we should do something about it. After a quick discussion we went to 500 Degrees.

Both PrimeTime and I went with the The Turbo Burger medium rare which was awesome. It had great chipotle ketchup, that has just the right amount of spice (as well as cheese, jalapenos, lettuce and tomato). If anything it could have done with some more of it. The first few bites missed the ketchup but when I tasted it, it was fantastic. T-Bone and Bone Marrow both went with the Classic Burger (lettuce, tomato and cheese).

The spicy fries were very good, but the truffle fries weren't worth the extra dollar and were underwhelming. Great value for a gourmet burger at $8. There is not a lot of seating, but we ate late and scored a table.

T-Bone, PrimeTime and I scored it a 4.25* out of 5, and Bone Marrow scored it a 4. It has taken an early lead that may be very difficult to beat.

It is located at 1504 Samson St Philadelphia and the website is under construction, but on Facebook.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company

Tried the Hop Ottin' IPA with a nice soy marinated beef tonight. A good hop filled beer from the beer swap. APV 7%. It was good but I prefer some of the others I have tried recently, such as the Founders, 90 minute and Maximas.

Hop-ottin-ipa

Anderson Valley Brewing is out of California. The bottle has a picture of Bear with Antlers. What does this mean? As described on their website:

It’s not a bear. Bears don’t have antlers. Of course not. Who ever heard of such a thing?
It is, however, a BEER. The Legendary Boonville Beer to be exact. Barkley, by name, who could be considered a cross between a bear and a deer (thus a beer). Barkley and his brethren are often seen about Anderson Valley by lovers of truly fine beers (especially if they’ve had a few).

Founders Pale Ale

I tried another beer tonight from the beer swap. This was a Founders Dry Hopped Pale Ale from Michigan. You might recall that I purchased the Founders Double Trouble. I have been interest to see how this compares to its big brother and it compares very well. It is 5.4% APV  great golden color, good head and well carbonated, but not too gassy. It had a very balanced taste, and after the first sip I thought wow. Good level of hops. This beer is available year round.

Founders Pale Ale

Piling On

Actually I have never watched Family Guy, but hearing about the opening day fun for the Mets, I thought it only appropriate to pick on Mets fans. As seen on Yahoo, Mocking.

Sorry PrimeTime, it really is time to switch to the Phillies.

And one more

The Mets

A Phillies fan, a Mets fan, & a Yankees fan are climbing a mountain & arguing about who loves their team more. The Yankees fan insists he is the most loyal. ''This is for the Yankees," he yells, & jumps off the mountain. Not to be outdone, the Phillies fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells "This is for the Phillies!!!"... & pushes the Mets fan off the mountain.

Pre Season Baseball

A friend of mine gave me two tickets to the last Phillies spring training game. T-Bone and I went done to Citizens Bank Ballpark for the first time in 2011. The attendance was apparently 36,000 but it seemed pretty empty. Although the Phillies lost to the Pirates we had a good time. The highlight for me at the ballpark outside of the baseball is the food.

After going to 8 different ballparks last year I really believe that Citizens Bank has the best food. Yesterday I had the BBQ Turkey sandwich from the Bull's BBQ. It is my go to sandwich at the ballpark. Of course I was still hungry so we went to Campos. The great thing about a pre-season game is that there was no lines. We got the Heater. A cheesesteak with pepper jack cheese and buffalo sauce. It was great. Try it when you get the chance. They also have a store in Old City at 2nd and Market.

Fantasy Baseball

We finally had our draft on Thursday night after PrimeTime screwed up on his first attempt. Pretty happy with my team. This year I even know who all of them are, and I didn't even have to pick a Met. I suppose it is for Major League Teams only.

My pitching was better last year (Lee, Price and Wainwright) but I think I have a better line up with Fielder, Pedoria, Tulowitski, MichaelYoung, Suzuki, Hart, Chris Young and a decent bench of Konerko, Oritz and Soriano (ok he was a disappointment last year for me and I dropped him, but he was my 19th pick this year). Pitching of Kershaw, Carpenter, Hughes, Buchholz, Cueto (I swear the guy starts 3 times a week), and De La Rosa (he is going to have a breakout year). Closers are Broxton and Cordero. Probably average to slightly above. We shall see.

It is fun to play.

Corned beef

Mrs Cast Iron made Corn Beef and cabbage tonight for dinner. A little late after St Patricks day, but delicious none the less. I tried the Harpoon Celtic Ale - An Irish Style Red to go with it. Not much to this beer. It is only available in the Spring, but is only average. Not too different from a lot of beers.

Last week I also tried the River Horse Lager from Lambertville NJ. Again not spectacular, but nothing wrong either. Just average.

Finally I had a Greene King IPA the other day at lunch. It was light at only 3. something APV. It was tasty. This is were the good news ends. I come to find out it is the official beer of England Rugby. Can't endorse something like that. I love the Wallabies too much. Greene King IPA

Pittsburgh

Just came back from a trip to Pittsburgh.  I have visited this city many times over the years and outside of Primanti Brothers there is no culinary value at all. The beer is average, and the food probably less so. The funny thing about it is that the locals love it. I just don't get it.

Minnesota and Chicago Beers

While in on my Minnesota trip I tried a couple of local brews.

Summit Extra Pale Ale - Very drinkable beer. Would be great as your everyday beer. Most people would like it. Has a good level of hops without being over powering like some others. At 5.1% APV it isn't too heavy either. Summitbrewing

Sheep Head Ale - This was an overly hoppy beer, which although drinkable, I wouldn't go back to it. Nothing wrong with it, just not my taste. APV is 7.7% so it is heavy on that side too. Sheephead

Fat Tire Amber Ale - This was a good beer that I had tried before in Colorado. I wouldn't have too many in one sitting at as it just seems heavier than it actually is. (APV is 5.2%). A little different style of beer but worth the try. I also like the name. Fat Tire

312 Urban Wheat Ale - A nice light beer. Could drink a few in one seating as it is only 4.2% APV. Had good flavor. This would be a great summer beer that would be a great replacement for the mass brewers.
312_urban_wheat

Masa

Went on a visit to Minneapolis this week. I had the opportunity to eat at a very good Mexican restaurant called MASA. Who would have thought about Mexican food in Minnesota? Masa-restaurant. The food was more contemporary than Tex Mex, fresh and tasty.

We started with the MASA Margarita on the rocks which was excellent. Not too boozy at all.

For the appertiser the table shared:

Queso Fundido con Hongos - Melted Chihuahua and havarti cheese with mixed mushrooms, onion, tomato, serrano and Dos Equis Amber; served with warm tortillas

Arroz Negro con Calamares en Salsa Verde - Black rice with calamari in salsa verde

Guacamole Picado - Mashed avocado with white onion, tomato, chile serrano, cilantro, and lime; served with raw vegetables and tortilla chips.

The cheese dish and guacamole were excellent. The calamari was good but not really enough for the group to share.

For a main course I had "Bistek con Chipotle Ancho Marinado y Cebollitas Verdes". I couldn't pronounce it but the description sold me. A grilled 10-oz. hanger steak with charred tomatillo-chipotle salsa; served with refried black beans, grilled scallions and chipotle sea salt for $23. I also tried the "Serrano Relleno" which was two serrano chilies filled with queso anejo and lightly fried in meringue batter;served with charred tomatillo and chile piquillo salsa. The chilies were spicy but not too hot. They had great flavor but didn't burn your mouth so that you couldn't taste the rest of your meal.

Tire Bite

Having recently been introduced to Flying Dog beers I have purchased a few different ones to try. Each time I'm loving them. Tonight's new one was the Tire Bite Golden Ale. This was was light and delicious. You could drink a few of these but unlike mass produced you will not be sacrifice flavor. APV is 5.1%.

Tire-Bite

Enjoy.

Stay Thirsty My Friends

On a whim I  bought a Dos Equis the other day and just had the lager with dinner. I good "green bottle beer", but with a much better advertising campaign - The most interesting man in the world.

My favorite quotes:

His blood smells like cologne
This reputation precedes him, like lightning precedes thunder.
He once had an awkward moment just to see how it feels, and
He lives vicariously through himself.

The whole campaign is in the attached link from YouTube.

Extra Credit

For extra credit in the burger challenge we all went to The Dandelion at different times. The reviews follows:

From myself, PrimeTime and T-Bone - "

Good overall burger but expensive at $16. Tomato Horseradish sauce was excellent. Would have scored higher if the price was better. Great atmosphere. Scores Cast Iron 3.5, PrimeTime 3.5, T-Bone 3.

Now Bone Marrow went all out on his description:

Mrs. Bone Marrow and I plus 2 friends, Fan & Sister of Fan, had dinner at The Dandelion on Monday night. While the service was very attentive, the actual delivery of our beverages was oddly a little slow for us. Mrs. B had the Fish & Chips and declared them to be freakin' excellent!  The fish was flaky, moist and the batter was crisp and light!  She gave the Dandelion a 4.5 rating...an obvious but acceptable novice rating was applied here.  In an attempt to hone her foodie rating skills, she will be attending the "Philly Cooks" event in the city tonight. Our friends both choose the Roast Organic Chicken Breast.  I forgot to get their opinions / rating but based on their completely empty plates, I'm guessing that they enjoyed the dishes.

I, of course, had the House Blend Burger. The combo of the smoked bacon, crisp pickle slices, shredded lettuce and the tomato-horseradish sauce was absolutely fabulous!  It was hands down a much better than Butcher and Singer's " Butcher Burger". Also, exceptionally tasty were their thick cut fries which we liberally added sea salt from the cool containers with the little wooden spoons. Overall, a gross score of 4.15 from me but a .5 deduction due to the pricing.  No way on earth is a burger worth $16...I don't care how you doll it up.  Both Bone Marrow's enjoyed the Philadelphia Yards IPA which seemed to go well with our meal.  Good favor and not so heavy that you got filled up and couldn't enjoy the food, too."

The man has a way with words.

Three more tried

I tried three more brews from recent beer exchanges.

The first was Pandora's Bock from Breckenridge Brewery in Colorado. Pandoras bock. APV is 7.5%. It was a good tasting beer that despite its APV wasn't overly heavy. It wasn't overly hoppy either.

The next was a Yards Philadelphia Ale. This was a pleasant easy to drink ale. Nothing to right home about but nothing wrong with it either. Better than mass produced beers but no as good as others I have tried. ABV is only 4.5% so more than a couple can be consumed without going off the deep end. Philadelphia-pale

The last one was Troeg's Nugget Nector. This wasn't to my taste. I was too hoppy for me. I guess when they say "Squeeze those hops for all they’re worth and prepare to pucker up", they weren't joking. The APV is 7.5%. I have three extra bottles so I guess the PrimeTime, T-Bone and Bone Marrow will get an extra beer to try for this months swap. Nugget Nectar.

The return

Mrs Cast Iron and a friend went to the flower show today and afterwards I met them for lunch at Reading Terminal. I walked them around and spoke of our food experiences. We decided to eat a Beck's Cajun Cafe. Becks Cajun Cafe

We also chose the Jambalaya Bowl. I hadn't tried it when I went with PT, BM and TB. I know that the others raved about, and know I know why. It was hearty, spicy and full with chicken and sausage. The corn bread was fresh and delicious. We capped it off with a huge Whoppie Pie from Beiler's Bakery.

A great return after 5 weeks.

Joined another one

A friend of mine told me about a beer exchange in the neighborhood, so I contacted the organizing and was invited along. It had 12 people each bringing a case of beer. It was really well organized, it has its own website, password protected, and each person posts their beer choice prior to the event. Of course as luck would have it two people still managed to buy the same beer. No problem each of us still got 11 different beers. I contributed the Founders "Double Trouble".

For taste, this was a close cousin of the Dog Fish Head 90 minute IPA. This beer was 9.4 APV, and was equally as big. It was delicious but not one that you are going to drink too many in a seating. Apparently this is a seasonal ale available January through April.

Double-trouble

Another thing about this beer exchange was the beer rating link on the website. It is below:

Tasting sheet

Lots of good info and things to think about when drinking a beer.

Cheers.

We started, 1 Down

We visited the first restaurant for Burger of the Month Club. For February we went to Butcher and Singer. I have been here a few times and had some pretty decent steak with exceptionally quick service, but this visit was about burgers. A burger at a white table cloth restaurant for $9.95 is exceptional value. I think we expected more, there was nothing special about the sauce, the cheese was disappointing, and it was almost non existant. One burger was ordered medium and it still came very pink. Overall it was scored 3.25* by me, 3.3* by Bone Marrow, 3.25* by PrimeTime and 3.75* by T-Bone. The overall average score was 3.3875. We also had three Guest judges from "Integrity" who are rookies when it comes to scoring and I think a little in awe of the sophistication of the restaurant and burger discussion. They scored it a 4. They are certain welcome back on our next adventures.

Let down

After having the 90 Minute IPA I found a Shelter Pale Ale in the fridge. It was a little thin for my taste, and really didn't have any lasting flavor. I don't think there is anything really wrong with it, but compared to its big brother I was disappointed.

Wow

T-Bone came through with his beer for our exchange. He contributed a Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial Pale Ale. This one will but hair on your chest. It is big, flavorful and not to be taken lightly at 9% APV. If you like hoppy beers this should do it for you.

Lots of Brews

Tried a lot of beers lately.

Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA from Minnesota. From their website  "Inspired by West Coast I.P.A.'s, but brewed with Michigan style. The Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped to give it a big aroma of pine and citrus. The flavors are big, yet very balanced between fresh hops and malt. Often described as "grapefruit" our hops give this beer an excellent fruit flavor that finishes dry, crisp, and clean. It will pour a nice deep copper color with a bit of haziness. Because of our almost patented "Intense Transfer Methods" our Crooked Tree has won several medals in the India Pale Ale category. " Darkhorsebrewery. A pretty decent beer but some of the beers below are a bit better

Burton Beer - Cask - An okay bitter which is low on the APV at 3.8%, and easy to drink.

Victory Headwater American Pale Ale - Headwaters-pale-ale. This was a good one. Worth trying over and over.

Thornbridge Merrie Spiced English Brown - From their website "Fantastic deep brown ale spiced with Coriander, Juniper and Lavender. " APV 5.9%. Interesting taste, with almost a apple cider kind of taste. Worth trying but probably wouldn't try too many of them. Maybe a good one to have with dessert, maybe even with the Pumpple.

Flying Dog - Old Stratch Amber Lager - From their website "Old Scratch Amber Lager is a malty, mellow beer that is fermented at medium temperatures to develop both ale and lager characteristics. "Gold Scratch" raises the standard in the amber lager category". APV 5.5% Old-Scratch  . A very good beer, great taste.

Weyerbacher Winter Ale - Winter Ale. A pretty good ale. Easy to drink.

Mission Street Pale Ale - Paso Robles, CA. Gold Medal Winner chosen by PrimeTime in our beer exchange. Great taste with an interesting finish, which was surprising.

Flying Dog - Snake Dog India Pale Ale - From their website "Snake Dog India Pale Aleis a Colorado-style IPA, power hopped with specialty hops from the Pacific Northwest. This is the brewery's hop monster, and the citrus fruit aroma will hypnotize the senses of the most hardcore  craft beer drinkers." APV 7.1% Snake-Dog . This one was from Bone Marrow's choose for the exchange. A great choice.

Avery Brewing - Joe's Premium American Pilsner - Premium American Pilsner. This was my choice for the beer exchange. Very much reminded me of Australian lager beers. It even came in a can, which of course I got crap about.

The Burger Choices

After a fair amount of discussion we have come up with the following 12 places to try their burgers. The list is in no particular order is:

The Good Dog
Village Whiskey
Burger & Singer
Snow White
Ted's Montana Grill
500 Degrees
Bobby's Burger Palace
Five Guys
PYT

We also have 2 alternates in case any of the 12 are not available at the time. They are London Grill and Parc.

Also to finish the challenge we have to eat at the 3 major fast food places, McDonald's, BK and Wendy's.

We also have an extra credit category. Any burger place can be added, scored, and if good enough win the challenge, but it will have to have multiple votes to unseat one of the 12.

Pass the ketchup.

The Next Challenge

After Reading Terminal it would have been wise to take a break, but I think we missed it so much we have jumped straight back into the next food challenge. This will be a year long challenge and will involve Burgers. We have chosen 12 different restaurants around the city. Plus McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King, plus any other place for extra credit.

On top of this we will also do a beer of the month swap, and coming in the summer "Street Meat 2011".  We will hit the street vendors and see what interesting things we can find. Check back often for updates.
